Blackbird was created to help get folks outdoors with instruments. The Old trees of northern California have always been an inspiration- part of the reason we wanted to make a great travel guitar in the first place- was to play in the forests and seek ways to further protect them. Blackbird has spent the better part of a decade developing small, travel-friendly, composite instruments that produce world class tone. But we wanted to take it further. So after lots of trial and error and years of engineering we created an entirely new plant-fiber composite with the sound and feel of a rare vintage instrument but made of renewable materials. Clara ukulele, a game changing instrument that delivers previously unobtainable vintage tone and exceptional durability. Made from Ekoa, a proprietary natural composite that delivers unmatched sustainability and performance. Clara’s every detail is engineered to generate the acoustic quality of a much larger instrument. So it can fill a room but fits in a backpack. From its patented hollow-neck design to its high-tech eco-fabric and resin construction, Clara is meticulously crafted by skilled artisans at Blackbird’s San Francisco workshop, aided by computer-driven precision technology.
When we started out with the Rider guitar, wood wasn’t an option because it is not stable and stiff enough for of our hollow neck let alone traveling- so we picked carbon fiber instead. Now with Ekoa we have a material that marries the traditional with cutting edge high performance and this is just the beginning. With professional-quality tone and legendary toughness in an earth-friendly compact package, Clara will no doubt inspire artists and adventurers alike.
